When to change your mailbox lock

Apartment and cluster mailboxes

In apartment buildings, the property owner or manager is usually responsible for the lock on each mailbox door. We change individual mailbox locks, cut new keys and help property managers keep keys organized between tenants. The Postal Service controls the main lock that mail carriers use, so we leave that one alone.

If your cluster mailbox belongs to the Postal Service, as some neighborhood boxes do, contact your local post office about the lock.

Home mailboxes

Locking mailboxes at the curb or on the wall of your house can be rekeyed or replaced when a key is lost or the lock wears out.
